The Workstead Sling Collection
We are pleased to debut our first ever furniture collection! The Workstead Sling Collection combines the gesture of sculptural slings with the solidity of articulated wooden frames. Constructed of turned wooden posts and pegs, the wooden frames are an elemental take on campaign-style furniture, while the sling is a complex and comfortable form.
THE CHAIR
Our goal in designing our first chair was to create a piece that is both familiar and new. Taking cues from the long tradiiton of campaign style furniture, that began with the Roorkhee chair in India in 1903, and continued with Kaare Klint s Safari Chair in 1933, we set out to distill the concept of a campaign chair to it’s elemental state.
The details are spare but refined in their proportions, and the frame gathers it’s weight from a series of repeated and expressed connections. The diameter of the wooden dowels and their capabilities was closely studied to achieve a balance of form and function. To develop the sling, a series of patterns were made to create an oblique contrast to the structure of the rectilinear frame. Trapezoidal in shape, the seat and back taper to create the arc of a reclined three dimensional form. Material options include Cherry, Oak, and Walnut frames. Sling options include Brown, Black, Nude, and Duck Canvas.
THE OTTOMAN
The Ottoman is the perfect companion to the Chair, yet can also be used alone as a freestanding stool. Constructed of turned wooden posts and pegs, with an integral sling, it echoes the chair in form but maintains a shallow profile.
ORIGINS & AVAILABILITY
Each wooden post is turned individually by Olollo in Brooklyn, NY, whoe were instrumental in the prototyping of the original chairs. Crafted from leather and canvas, the slings are cut, stitched, and finished with an industrial sewing machine by Homsi Leather from leather sourced locally in New England. Each piece is made to order in a variety of 9 offered configurations of frames and slings. Typical lead time is 8-10 weeks. Please consult Workstead directly to inquire about availability and lead time. We're excited to execute our first production run this Fall.
