The First Ward
The First Ward salon is located in a former Tulsa brothel that had been discovered in a beautiful state of decay. To preserve the milieu, Workstead introduced salon programming via a wood structure through which occupants can glimpse the 1,333-square-foot, loft-like room. The wallpaper, plaster, and painted brick viewed through Workstead’s intervention all date to the era of the brothel. The framework further reveals the new mechanical systems that service the building. Separate walnut and brass monoliths anchor the salon entrance—an abstraction of a reception desk—and divide the guest lounge from the salon stations.
