Workstead
The Dewberry
The five-star Dewberry Hotel occupies the L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building overlooking Marion Square in downtown Charleston, which government workers had vacated in 1999 after a hurricane sustained damage to the 7-story office facility. Regional real estate developer John Dewberry invited Workstead to lead the federal building’s conversion into a hospitality destination that celebrates this rare local example of mid-century architecture. Across 155 guest rooms as well as a restaurant, two bars, a public living room, ballroom, spa, and historic lobby, Workstead reinterpreted the enduring materials and spatial strategies of the American South through a modernist lens. The Dewberry commission included all interior finishes, custom millwork, furniture, and lighting, providing us the opportunity to support Charleston-area makers like Becca Barnett and Peyton Avrett in addition to our national collaborators.
