Upper West Side Apartment

At 680 square feet, no conscionable overhaul of the one-bedroom Upper West Side Apartment could have yielded separate living and dining rooms. Instead, Workstead conceived a multiuse public space where white oak cabinetry at the window wall connects the kitchen and living room, blurring the boundary between countertop and credenza. Underneath, these cabinets have a cascading profile that integrates finger pulls, and they boast rotated wood grains for visual diversity. In the bedroom, Workstead installed millwork that is similar in appearance and multifunctionality, while yacht-like bedroom closets announce themselves only by means of subtle yet grabbable notches. Hiroko Takeda’s woven window treatments for both zones provide a calming buffer from the bustle of Manhattan.
