INGLESIDE RESIDENCE
Ingleside Residence was restored by Workstead Co-Founders Robert Highsmith and Stefanie Brechbuehler between 2020-2024. The home sits on a hill above a square parcel in the historic district of Salisbury, CT. While parts of the structure date to the 18th century, the majority of the house was constructed in 1815. The interiors of the home itself benefit from large, 12-over-12 windows and unusually tall ceilings for a home of this age, connecting it to the outdoors while retaining the privacy granted by a lovingly maintained landscape outside. The grounds include a formal English parterre ‘knot garden’ as well as a wild meadow, vegetable garden, 200-foot long 18th-century stone wall, small greenhouse, renovated carriage house, and numerous cedar out-buildings.
Tones and materials utilized reflect a vision of ‘folk modernism’ that pervades many of the objects collected within the home. These carefully selected pieces suggest a dialogue between elemental forms and tactile materials - much like the house itself. Antique items and contemporary furniture and lighting mix easily to give the interiors a grounded and timeless feel.
The Carriage House is the newest addition to the property, conceived as a complete renovation of a an existing structure dating to 1856. With a new painted clapboard exterior, cedar shingled roof, and monumental paned glass windows, the updated exterior neatly frames a modern interior studio space. A poured concrete floor sets the stage for an open ground floor workspace that meanders to an overhead loft via a staircase, recalling the building's historic use for livestock and hay.
