Germantown Residence

The Germantown Residence is defined by a sequence of unfolding views. The journey to the Hudson River incorporates a dense evergreen path that reveals livestock, a farmette, a modern yoga pavilion, a guest house, and ultimately the original farmhouse. Perched high above the River with a commanding westward view, the farmhouse is the hearth of the property, anchored firmly atop the steep slope. Workstead’s addition to the farmhouse provides a foundational sense of place through the use of stone, wood, and monumental forms. The main house addition, a stone volume, was conceptualized as a modern ruin. Alongside the stone volume, other smaller additions work together to bring new life to the original farmhouse. The ultimate goal was to create a sense of timeless wonder, setting the farmhouse firmly into the landscape.

The restored farmhouse incorporates three important additions. A new 2-story addition to the South includes a Kitchen and Dining Room on the main floor, with a Master Bedroom and Bathroom above. On the East side of the house, a new porch was constructed, to provide a more gracious entry to the existing house. It is a replica of the original West-facing porch that looked out upon the river. The third addition is a gracious screened porch facing West, connecting to a sequence of exterior rooms that terrace down to reach the Hudson River.

Materials are true to the vernacular of the farmhouse and to the Hudson River Valley. The original house was clad in new painted clapboard, while the "modern ruins" of the addition and fireplace volume are stacked stone, with deeply set wooden windows flanking a delicate trellis. The interiors of the farmhouse incorporate materials that were original to the house, while baths were updated to include timeless but precise detailing. The interiors of the main addition will balance the heavy, earthen materials proposed with a sense of delicacy. Thin-framed wooden windows offset the heavy stone volume downstairs, with the kitchen conceptualized as a large wooden cabinet set within the larger stone box itself. Upstairs, the Master Suite combines soft, warm materials such as plaster and wood to create a serene environment within the ruin.
