Workstead
Charleston Carriage House
Situated behind the Workstead-designed Charleston Townhouse, the three-bedroom Charleston Carriage is accessed by a hedge-bound brick courtyard. Occupants enter a living room containing two gas fireplaces that were originally used for cooking and laundering. Workstead collaborated with local woodworker Clay Richardson to install a cane-paneled credenza in the living room, so that the fireplaces and millwork appear integrated with the building’s structure. The living room flanks one side of the kitchen, where hand-painted aubergine cabinets provide a counterpoint to the adjacent textures. For the dining area on the far side of the kitchen, we again opted for a sensuous treatment, with Richardson lining the space in cane-and-cypress cabinets and south-facing window seat. Upstairs rooms feature various combinations of brick and cypress.
