On a narrow stretch of eastern Long Island that had been historically used as a portage site, the Canoe Place Inn has been receiving guests almost continuously between 1707 and 2010. Rechler Equity Partners tapped Workstead to help relaunch the property as a sophisticated resort and event venue in 2022, for which the studio designed identity-defining interiors.  The spaces represent a mélange of historical design vocabularies and foster a blurring of the interior and the garden-like campus, while paying respect to the architecture of William Bottomley, who had rebuilt the property after a 1921 fire. Whimsical statement furnishings and artworks by Doug Aitken and Tony Tasset further propel Workstead’s hospitality vision into the future.
